IELTS Reading: a reliable method for Matching Headings
Matching Headings asks you to choose the best heading for each paragraph from a list — and there are always more headings than paragraphs, so several are there just to trip you up. It's one of the tasks candidates fear most, but a clear method makes it manageable.
Match the MAIN idea, not a keyword
The number-one mistake is picking a heading because it repeats a word you saw in the paragraph. A heading has to capture what the WHOLE paragraph is about, not one detail inside it. Read the paragraph, then sum up its main point in your own words in one short phrase — then find the heading that matches that phrase.
Work in the right order
- Do the paragraphs you're sure about first, and cross each used heading off the list.
- That shrinks the options for the hard paragraphs.
- Only two headings left for two paragraphs? Compare them side by side.

Distractors usually match a single sentence or a minor detail, or they're true but too broad or too narrow for the paragraph. If a heading only fits one line, it's probably a trap. If it could describe half the passage, it's too general.
Don't trust the first sentence alone
The topic sentence often signals the main idea, but not always — sometimes the point arrives later or turns partway through. Skim the whole paragraph before you commit to a heading.
